Stop Nick Griffin from coming to Australia

December 2008

We’re pleased to report that the proposed visit to Australia by far right wing British National Party leader, Nick Griffin has been cancelled.
Thanks to everyone who took up our call to oppose this visit and stand up against importing racist abuse to Australia.

Catalyst is working with community, faith, union and human rights organisations to prevent the visit to Australia of Nick Griffin in December 2008.

Since drawing public attention to this issue, we’ve been pleased with the response from the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, the Hon. Chris Evans. This confirms any visa application by Nick Griffin will be assessed against the character requirements of our Migration Act.

While we are grateful that this acknowledges community concern about this issue, we will keep up the community pressure until the issue of Nick Griffin’s application is resolved.

Nick Griffin has been convicted of incitement to racial hatred in the UK. He was denied entry to Australia in 1998 by the former Minister Philip Ruddock. Ten years on, his views remain deeply offensive and divisive.

Griffin has been invited here by the recently formed Australian Protectionist Party (APP) who have said he is here to talk about the BNP’s “fight to protect Britain and its people from the demographic genocide that is threatening their homeland, caused by the large-scale immigration of people from the Third World."

The APP are a minority organisation who are using Nick Griffin to raise their own profile to pedal racism and abuse.

All non-citizens who wish to enter Australia must satisfy the requirements of the Migration Act and regulations, including the character test.

The character test includes provisions to ensure that a non-citizen will not vilify, incite discord in or represent a danger to the Australian community, or a segment of that community.

Tell the Minister that we have no place here for the extremist views of far right politicians like Nick Griffin.

Ask the Minister to use his power to refuse or deny entry to Mr Griffin.
