Professor Gilles Kepel on the Future of Political Islam
After September 11 2001, two grand narratives emerged. The "War on Terror" led by America, and the universal Jihad led by radical Islamic groups such as Al Qaeda. In this talk at the Lowy institute, Professor Gilles Kepel analyses the tactics of Al Qaeda, arguing that post 9/11, they largely failed in their mission to gain widespread support in the Muslim world. Keppel also looks at the concept of democracy in the Muslim word, examining popularly elected parties such as Hamas and Hezbollah, and how they have been more successful in gaining grassroots followers.

Barry Wain's Scathing Assessment of Malaysian Politics
Former Malaysian leader Anwar Ibrahim's trial for sodomy has been heard amidst major controversy and strong allegations that the whole thing is a politically motivated setup. In his new biography of former Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir, journalist Barry Wain argues that modern Malaysia is in a state of political crisis, and that the ruling UMNO party needs to urgently address issues of corruption and nepotism in order to regain international credibility. He's speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra.
